How to Apply for Unlisted Job
Most people scour classified ads, online job listing websites or rely on a headhunter to conduct a job search. There's another way to uncover your special job opportunity. According to an article posted on Career Hub, a job advice website, "Some 90 percent of job openings go unadvertised, so even if you do a great job of searching online for advertised job openings, you're likely missing 90 percent of the openings." Take advantage of finding unadvertised jobs by following these steps.
Instructions
1. Determine the job position type you desire. Outline your interests, skills and goals. Define the salary you need, hours you can or can't work, commute time you can allow, work environment, culture and any other factors that matter to you most. These variables help you decide on the types of companies and industries that can meet your expectations.
2. Identify businesses that are most likely to have the job opening types and characteristics you outlined. Research companies using resources such as Internet search engines, newspapers (national and local), trade journals, company websites, Yellow Pages and business directories. Compile company background information that is useful in determining whether or not an organization is a good fit for you. Company services, mission statements, culture and history help in your decision-making process.
3. Make a list of the most important factors that play a role in your decision-making process in order of their importance. Select companies you researched that meet your criteria and match your desires most.
4. Find names and contact information for people in key roles that are relative to the job positions you are interested in at companies you selected from your research list. If you can't find a contact's name, make a phone call to the business and ask for the name and contact information for the person in charge of a department you want to pursue. Ask friends, family or business acquaintances if they, or someone they know, may have a contact at an organization you are interested in approaching.
5. Contact the companies using the information you collected. Send a letter of interest that explains your reason for wanting to work for them and how your skills can benefit their organization. Demonstrate the knowledge that you have gained about their company through your research. Send a resume that emphasizes your related experience to the job position you are interested in pursuing.
6. Follow up with each company within a week after your initial contact. Express your continued interest in their organization. Ask them to keep you in mind for future job opportunities. Repeat Step 2 through Step 6. Continue taking action to get an unlisted job opportunity.
